Over the past ten months we have all learned that no one knows when the next big change is going to happen. And whether you’re planning to make your next career change or not, you need to be prepared for changes as they come.  One of the very best ways that you can be prepared is to have a solid network, a task that can seem pretty difficult during a pandemic.   In today’s episode, Thom Singer shares what has changed, and what has stayed the same, in today’s rules of networking.  He illustrates the reasons why fostering relationships has become more essential than ever before. Thom offers simple and stress-free ways that you can have better conversations, network more effectively (even while social distancing) and strengthen your relationships, starting today.    On today’s podcast, you will learn about: The why behind networking All of the opportunities in your life come from the people you know.  It is critical to strengthen your network, especially in a time of social distancing.  Networking is a long-term play that leads to mutually beneficial relationships. You can’t have relationships with people if you aren’t talking to them.  Shared experiences create bonds between people.  Unscripted conversations don’t have to be hard.    6 ways to have better conversations Be curious about other people — ask questions and pay attention to the answers. Look for shared interests and commonalities with others, including alma maters, organizations, and friends.  Be intentional when you go into conversations — define your purpose for being in there.  Have a story to tell that is unscripted and interesting.  Don't prejudge other people.  Have fun — enjoy the opportunities that come with connecting with others.    How to network during the pandemic You have to take ownership of finding ways to connect with others. Attend the virtual events that are currently available.  Reach out to the contacts that you already have.  Be the person who creates virtual events. Schedule one-on-one appointments with the people you work closely with.    Email Thom directly at [email protected]. Do you have an example of extraordinary efforts or innovation during these unprecedented times? We would love to hear your story and possibly interview you for an upcoming episode.
