Our little babies are so precious and even a minor illness can make every parent worry.
But when its more serious, sometimes the most obvious sign is our own gut instinct.
In this episode I sit down and talk with Orlaith Donlon as she shares her experience this year of trusting her gut feeling which was telling her that something was wrong with her little baby boy Rua.
After noticing that Rua’s weight wasn’t coming on like her other children, Rua began to have obvious breathing recessions. Although happy and other wise healthy looking Orlaith knew something just was not right and with the support of her GP fought for the specialist attention he needed.
As a mum of 4 and a trained midwife, Orlaith explains so kindly how it doesn’t matter how experienced you might feel, when something happens to your own child the emotional pain and weight of concern especially throughout this cold and flu season can be so heavy.
We talk about out the fear and worst case scenario thinking when it became real, how she grieved for the carefree healthy life she assumed he would have, how so often she needed to release these feelings without being told “everything would be ok” and how she now understands the power of letting people show their love by accepting their help.
We talk about how each and every one of us can protect those vulnerable in society by getting the flu vaccine and by washing our hands properly, about how when he stopped breathing all her CPR training went out the window in panic and how everyone in a community should know it so that we can all step in.
How being honest with your other children about what’s going on can help ease their fears and how resting in that precious post partum days gave her the resilience and power to keep going over the last very difficult months.
The only thing better than talking to Orlaith was seeing her little happy boy in her arms. And you can too by following orlaithdonlon or her hashtag rootingforroo on Instagram.
