In the mid-19th century, the various games called football separated and evolved into their own games.  While association football and rugby became dominant on one side of the Atlantic, a totally different version of football evolved on the other side of the Atlantic.  That version of the game over the course of 150 years has grown into the move valuable professional sports league in the world.
