Radio National Breakfast — Separate stories podcast - Un pódcast de ABC listen - Miercoles

The Australian government says almost 3,000 Australians and their families in Iran have registered for assistance to leave Iran and travel home. Foreign Minister Penny Wong says the government has deployed Australian officials to the Azerbaijani border. This means Australians who are able to cross over from Iran will immediately get support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. But one Australian woman says her mother was given the wrong information from Australia's embassy in Turkey — and when she reached the Azerbaijan side of the border, she was refused entry and forced back into Iran. Guest: Naz Forooz, an Iranian Australian whose mother is stuck in Iran. Producer: Anne Barker  A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokesperson provided the below statement to ABC Radio National Breakfst on 25/06/2025: "DFAT has deployed consular staff to Azerbaijan, including at its border crossing, to support Australians departing Iran. We ask Australians in Iran who wish to depart to do so if it is safe. We're working with Australians registered in Iran to facilitate border crossing codes and acknowledge that unstable internet connectivity in Iran is making this more difficult. Unfortunately, at this stage our ability to provide consular services is extremely limited due to the situation on the ground."
