In episode 15, ADHD coach Siope Kinikini shares 5 different refocus activities to help ADHD kids focus. These activities require limited supplies and are something that they can do on their own to focus. How to help a child with ADHD refocus is to understand what’s going in their brain. ADHD kids struggle with being able to think in terms of the future vs. what is happening now. They get easily distracted by what is happening now around them or what they want right at that moment. Which is why refocus activities are so important as it teaches them to have purposes in their distracted rather than being distracted by everything. Refocus activities help show your child that they have control over their body and their thoughts and that gives them power. Isometric exercises Isometric exercises are activities that involve pushing or pulling movement and focusing on that movement and can be done sitting down or standing up. Stress ball or fidget toys Stress balls or fidget toys work well as ADHD kids do well with tactile refocus activities. Give them a challenge This one is especially good to excite their brains so that they won’t be bored at school. The idea is to give them a challenge that would make doing a task more difficult which would require them to have increased focus. Mindfulness Mindfulness helps kids reset by being aware of what their body is doing by taking a “break.” Focus on a specific color or thing Have them close their eyes and pick on one thing to focus on. This could be a color or an object. For full show transcript and notes visit: https://www.smarterparenting.com/adhd-parenting-podcast/
