Confirmation bias is our tendency to cherry-pick information that confirms our existing beliefs or ideas. We all have confirmation bias as we all have different life experiences that shape how we view the world. It is why two different people can look at the same situation and draw two different conclusions. Many parents experience confirmation bias with an ADHD diagnosis. It may mean we buy into behavior that confirms the ADHD symptoms, or we believe our child is limited by their ADHD diagnosis. Both beliefs can be dangerous. We constantly need to challenge our confirmation bias as people and situations change. Challenging confirmation bias is how we grow and allows us to approach situations with a growth mind-frame.
