The Aubrey Masango Show - Un pódcast de 702
Botswana held a national election last week Wednesday to decide if one of Africa's longest-ruling parties stays in power for another five-year term. The Botswana Democratic Party has governed the southern African nation for 58 years, since independence from Britain in 1966, and has held the presidency throughout. Botswana's opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has won a majority in parliament and can form the next government, the electoral commission announced on Friday, marking a historic defeat for the party that had governed the diamond-rich country for nearly six decades. Outgoing president Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat in Wednesday's general election and said his administration would begin handing over the reins of government in the next few days. Thembisa Fakude, a senior research fellow at Africa Asia Dialogues and chief executive officer at the Mail & Guardian, joins to tell us more about the successful Botswana elections.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
