How does the experiences of midwives influence their decisions on where to give birth and what that care looks like? I chat to midwife, author and researcher Sharon Stoliar about her amazing research in to midwives and their birth preferences. In her research, she found some eye opening statistics surrounding home birth and continuity of carer which midwives are experiencing, such as 75% of midwives got continuity of carer, and a huge 11% had home births compared to the national average of 0.4%! We discuss WHY midwives are choosing to birth outside of hospital, and why knowing your carer is ultimately the driving force behind where midwives choose to birth. We talk about her PhD and the multiple research papers coming out of the huge wealth of data she has gathered, as well as bias, privilege, autonomy and advocacy, and also chat about Sharon's own experiences of birth trauma as a mother and midwife.
