In this episode I chat to midwife and researcher Dr Claire Feeley about her new book  "Supporting Physiological Birth Choices in Midwifery Practice". We discuss the research that the book focuses on, and the challenges that midwives face in supporting autonomy and birthing out of guidelines. Claire talks about her initial research in to freebirth, and how led on to further research looking at supporting physiology. She identifies how organisational culture and policy, as well as our own individual biases and fears, have all played a part in creating an environment where supporting choice is seen as dangerous from both a birthing perspective as well as a professional one. We discuss how NHS trusts and individuals can instigate change in order to improve the experiences and outcomes for birthing women and people and their babies. This is a vital listening for anyone who works in maternity care, whether you're a midwife, student, or senior leader. You can purchase a copy of Claire's book, either for yourself or your institution at https://www.clairefeeley.com/books You can also follow Claire on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/drfeeleyrm/ The Better Birth podcast is hosted by hypnobirthing and antenatal teacher Erin Fung.
