Helping Struggling Readers Improve Their Reading: Top Ten Points That Parents Need to Know Dr. Margolis will discuss critical, but often overlooked factors for helping struggling readers become more successful and motivated readers. He will focus on how to improve IEPs and general education programs so they take advantage of these factors, in school and in the home, without frustrating children, parents, and teachers. About Dr. Margolis Howard Margolis, Ed.D., is Professor Emeritus of Reading and Special Education at the City University of New York. Howard is former editor of the Journal of Psychological and Educational Consultation and for more than two decades he has edited theReading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties. He is also the co-author of Reading Disabilities: Beating the Odds and Five Ways to Help Your Child. Howard has received many honors, such as two Media Arts Awards from the New Jersey Development Disabilities Council and the Educator of the Year award from the Learning Disabilities Association of NJ. He was a special education Hearing Officer for Delaware and New Jersey and has frequently helped parents and schools to settle disputes. In 2007, Queens College’s Department of Educational and Community Programs honored his work by creating The Howard Margolis Advocacy and Social Justice Award.
