Many parents feel under so much pressure to ‘Keep up with the Joneses’.   Whether it’s the continuous cycle of after-school activities - ferrying kids from Cubs to Swimming to Piano … Or ensuring that the house is pristine and all the laundry is neatly stowed away - the need to manage these high expectations can be relentless.   In this episode, I chat with Mary Broddle who, through declining health is unable to maintain this idea of ‘perfection’ - and Mary is just fine with that, thank you very much!   We talk about how technology can be a necessary lifeline and why teaching your child to contribute to the running of the house through chores and responsibilities prepares them for independence a bit earlier...   Want to know more? Then Grab a cuppa - and keep listening! ~~~ More about Mary : Bio – Engineer, Embroidery Entrepreneur & Disabled Mum Mary is a disabled mum to two boys, aged 11 and 8. From having to ask her midwife for an OT referral, to isolating through the pandemic, her health has affected how she parents in a big way. We all feel we should be providing our children with opportunities and experiences, but what if you can’t? Mary says cut yourself some slack - being loved is the main thing they need to experience. As she has become increasingly disabled Mary has realised more and more the importance of the example she sets her sons. Mary had a successful 20 year career in Rail Engineering. But her worsening health meant she reached a point where she had to accept she couldn’t keep going as she was and she left her job. Whilst being Housebound, Embroidery has helped her cope with chronic illness and increasing disability; addressing the challenges, many of which are beyond her control. And so - using this passion of hers Mary has set up her own Embroidery business (a far cry from the rail industry!) and she now shares her skills to help others find the enjoyment and mental health benefits it has afforded her. ~~~
